In response to a perceived need to revitalize The Falls area of South Hadley, Town Meeting voted in 2014 to establish the South Hadley Redevelopment Authority. The Board has five members, four elected at Town Meeting and one appointed by the Governor. At the same time, Town Meeting charged the Authority with developing an urban renewal plan for the Falls. With the aid of a professional consultant and support from the Town’s Planning Department, the Authority has prepared an extensive Falls Urban Redevelopment and Renewal Plan. It extends over twenty years and provides a fairly detailed set of steps that it believes will greatly strengthen the Falls. The plan has been approved at the State level, pending Town Meeting approval. At the November 20th Special Town Meeting, Town Meeting Members will be asked to approve the plan. Frank DeToma, Chair of the Authority, will provide an overview of the plan and answer audience questions.

In 2013, the South Hadley Selectboard appointed a historic district study group, and asked it to investigate the possibility of establishing a Local Historic District in the Falls area. After much thought and work, the group has prepared a plan for the establishment of such a district, in the North Main Street area of the Falls. The plan has been approved by the Massachusetts Historical Commission, pending approval at Town Meeting. Frank DeToma, a member of the study group, will present some information about local historic districts in general, and describe the proposed North Main Street Local Historic District.
